Background and Aims: Considering the importance of long-term implant stability and the potential influence of adjacent tooth and bone conditions, this study aimed to compare the crestal bone loss and Periotest Value in implants adjacent to edentulous areas, endodontically treated teeth with appropriate crowns, and healthy teeth.
Materials and Methods: This prospective cohort study was conducted at 1404 on 42 patients who attended Khorasgan Dental School (Iran) and required single-tooth implant treatment. The patients were enrolled through convenience sampling and allocated into three groups according to the condition of the adjacent tooth: Group A, implants adjacent to edentulous areas; Group B, implants adjacent to endodontically treated teeth with appropriate crowns; and Group C, implants adjacent to healthy teeth. Age and gender were matched among the groups. Three months after implant placement and healing abutment connection, standardized parallel periapical radiographs were obtained. Crestal bone loss was evaluated by comparing the baseline and follow-up radiographs. In addition, Periotest values (PTV) were recorded three times for each implant at a standardized buccal site after healing abutment placement, and the mean value was used for statistical analysis. Data were entered into SPSS 27 software and statistical analyses were performed using one-way ANOVA and Chi-square tests at a significance level of 95%.
Results: The distribution of patients in terms of gender and age was similar between the three groups (p≥0.05). The implant crestal bone loss in groups A, B and C was 0.72 ± 0.37, 0.68 ± 0.36 and 0.68 ± 0.39 mm, respectively. Also, the implant periosteum value in groups A, B and C was
-2 ± 0.55, -3.29 ± 3.52 and -2.5 ± 3.35 mm, respectively. No statistically significant difference was observed in the mean bone loss (p=0.939) and periosteum value (p=0.618) of the implant between the three groups of patients.
Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that implant stability (based on crestal bone loss and Periotest value) did not differ in various regions adjacent to edentulous areas, endodontically treated teeth with appropriate crowns, and healthy teeth. Other factors are likely to have a greater impact on the implant stability.
