Aims and Scopes
The "Journal of Dental Medicine" is the official scientific publication of the School of Dentistry of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, a leading journal within the field of "Dentistry". This journal has an aim on publishing novel and high-quality research articles to influence the practice of dentistry at clinician, research, and industry on an international basis.
The main interested topics include oral diseases, periodontology, endodontology, operative dentistry, dental biomaterials science, fixed and removable prosthodontics, orthodontics, oral radiology, implantology, clinical trials including epidemiology and oral health, as well as clinically relevant oral biology.
 
Open Access Statement
This is an open access journal which means that all content is freely available without charge to the user or his/her institution. Users are allowed to read, download, copy, distribute, print, search, or link to the full texts of the articles, or use them for any other lawful purpose, without asking prior permission from the publisher or the author. This is in accordance with the BOAI definition of open access.

1. General
 The aim of "Journal of Dental Medicine" is to promote communication of scientific information between academia, industry, and the dental practitioners. The "Journal of Dental Medicine" is published quarterly and contributors are recommended to prepare their manuscripts in accordance with the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals which can be visited at: http://www.icmje.org/index.html. Please read the instructions below carefully for details on the submission of manuscripts, the journal's requirements as well as information concerning the procedure after a manuscript has been accepted for publication in "Journal of Dental Medicine".
- The manuscripts should be submitted online only. A cover letter must be accompanied with the manuscript file, signed by each author, and stating that the manuscript is not concurrently under consideration for publication in another journal, that all of the named authors were involved in the work leading to the publication of the paper, and that all the named authors have read the paper before it is submitted for publication.
- Since the original language of the journal is Persian, please avoid English terms with accepted Persian equivalents as possible.
- Articles should be typed on one side of A4 paper, with 1.2 cm line space and 2 cm margins from each side. Word package (version 2003) must be used with Mitra 14 font for Farsi and Times New Roman 12 for English typing.
- Number all pages consecutively and start with title page.
2. Ethical guidelines
- Manuscripts submitted to the journal are accepted on the understanding that the recommendations of the Declarations of Helsinki and Tokyo, for humans, and the European Committee guidelines for the use of experimental animal have been adhered to.
- Authors must state in the manuscript that the protocol complies with these guidelines and are approved by their institutional ethics committee. - For any investigation involving human subject(s), informed consent must be obtained from the subject(s) and/or their guardian(s) and this must be clearly stated in the paper.
-The submitted manuscript should be accompanied by a written statement that the manuscript has not and will not be published or submitted in whole or in part in any other journal. This statement should have the signature of all authors.
3. Conflicts of interest Submitting
 a manuscript must be accompanied with a statement from the authors disclosing all financial and personnel relationship that might bias their work, if any. Besides, they are requested to evident whether impending conflicts do or do not exist. A separate page should cover this proclamation and if there are further details, could be mentioned in covering letter. If an organization encompasses any financial interest in the outcome of the study, the authors are appealed to provide a declaration that have full access to all the data in the study and take complete responsibility for the integrity of the data and the accuracy of the data analysis. 4. Process of evaluating the paper: Journal of Dental Medicine is a peer reviewed journal. The received manuscript is checked to meet all requirements for initial submission and if correct a letter of submission is sent to the author .Then the manuscript is sent to three or more reviewers for scientific, methodologic and statistical evaluation. The reviewers are asked to return the article to the journal office within 15 days. The author will be informed of the reviewers' comments and the process will be continued after the receipt of the revised article from the author which should be received within one month. In case of delay in author's response, the journal keeps the right to put the article away from the evaluating process. Final decision about acceptance of a manuscript for publication will be made in the editorial board meeting on the basis of reviewer's comments, author's responses or revisions which is held regularly every other week .Upon final approval, a letter of acceptance is issued to the author. On publication, each author will receive two free reprints of the article. 5. Manuscript submission procedure Manuscripts should be submitted electronically via the online submission site at http://jdm.tums.ac.ir. The use of an online submission and peer review site enables immediate distribution of manuscripts and consequentially speeds up the review process.

• Log-in or, if you are a new user, click on 'register here'.
• If you are registering as a new user. - After clicking on 'Create Account', enter your name and e-mail information and click 'Next'. Your e-mail information is very important. - Enter your institution and address information as appropriate, and then click "Next" and then select your areas of expertise. Click 'Finish'.
• If you are registered as user, but have forgotten your log in details, enter your e-mail address under 'Password Help'. The system will send you an automatic user ID and a new temporary password.
• After you have logged into submit a new manuscript, enter data and answer questions as appropriate. You should upload your pre-prepared covering letter and your manuscript.
• Click the 'Next' button on each screen to save your work and advance to the next screen.
• You are required to upload your files. - Click on the 'Browse' button and locate the file on your computer. - When you have selected the files then click "send"
• Review your submission (in HTML and PDF format) before completing your submission by sending it to the Journal. Click the 'Submit' button when you are finished reviewing. 6. Manuscript Structure Title page This page must include:
- The title of article (no more than 15 words) in English and Persian. - Authors' information (first name, surname, affiliation, department, faculty and university) in English and Persian.
- Name and address of the organization where the work was done.
- Name, full postal address, telephone, fax number and e-mail address of the corresponding author (to whom proofs and other correspondence should be sent).
- Avoid abbreviations in the title page. Abstract - Articles must be accompanied by English and Persian abstracts both structured and no more than 250 words.
- Abstract of original articles must be structured as follows: title, background and aim of the study, materials and methods, results, conclusion and keywords (3-10 words).
- Keywords should be selected based on Mesh (Medical Subject Heading) system. - Avoid name, addresses or other authors' information in the abstract page. 6.1. Original manuscript Introduction
- Must be as brief as possible. - The rationale for the study or observation must be stated with proper reference to previous researches.
- The purpose of the article must be stated at the end of introduction. - No data or conclusion from the work should be reported. Materials and Methods This section must include
- The type of study. - Method(s) of selection of the observational or experimental subjects (samples, patients or laboratory animals, including controls). - General composition details and batch numbers for all materials.
- Names and sources of all commercial products (including the country).
- Statistical tests and significance.
- Details of procedures that have been published previously should be referred to by citation.
- When a modified procedure is used, only the author's modifications of the previously published method need to be given in detail.
- Reports of experiments involving patients and healthy volunteer's must demonstrate the steps taken to obtain informed consent and to maintain confidentiality. The procedures followed must be in accordance with institutional, regional, international guidelines and conform to accepted ethical standards. Results
- Must be presented in logical sequence in the text, tables, and illustrations.
- Only important observations must be emphasized or summarized.
- Data in the tables or illustrations must not be repeated in the text.
- P values must be stated for statistical analysis. Discussion
- Must explain and interpret important findings as well as implications of the results.
- Data or other material given in the introduction or the results section must not be repeated in detail.
- Compare and discuss with previous works (references).
- Link the conclusions with the goals of the study but avoid unqualified statements and conclusions not completely supported by the data.
- Indicate the limitations of the study. - Implications and suggestions for future research must be given at the end of this section. Conclusion
- Results or Discussion must not be repeated.
- Must be directly related to the presented work.
- Inference, significance, or consequences must be stated concisely. Acknowledgements Should be included at the end of the text and not in footnotes. Under acknowledgements please specify contributors to the article other than the authors accredited. The journal requires that all sources of institutional, private and corporate financial support for the work within the manuscript must be fully acknowledged, and any potential conflicts of interest noted. Grant or contribution numbers may be acknowledged, and principal grant holders should be listed. Acknowledgments should be brief and should not include thanks to anonymous referees and editors. References - When listing references, follow the uniform Vancouver style (for more information, visit: http://www.icmje.org/index.html#reference). - References should be numbered consecutively in order of the appearance in the text.
- References in the text, tables, and legends must be cited by Arabic numerals in parentheses.
- Only references closely related to the author's work should be listed and these should be confined to published articles or those accepted for publication and in press. - Citation of unpublished data and personal communications should be avoided, but if essential, they should be cited parenthetically in the text (e.g., Tanaka JA., pers. Comm.). In such cases, the authors must obtain permission from the data owner to quote his or her unpublished work.
- Journal abbreviations should conform to those in the latest edition of Index Medicus. For further information the author is referred to the latest issue of the journal. All references must be listed at the end of the paper, double-spaced, without indents. For example: Wan Q, Sheffield J, McCool J, Baran G. Light curable dental composite designed with colloidal crystal reinforcement. Dent Mater. 2008;24(12):1692-8. Tables
- Should be typed on separate pages and numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals.
- Tables should be self explanatory and include a brief descriptive title which should be placed at the top.
- Explain in footnotes all nonstandard abbreviations that are used in each table.
- Be sure that each table is cited in the text. Figures - Figures should be professionally drawn and photographed.
- Send sharp, glossy, photographic prints.
- Letters, numbers, and symbols should be clear and of sufficient size that when reduced for publication each item will still be legible. - Human subjects must not be identifiable in photographs.
- Figures should be numbered consecutively according to the order in which they have been first cited in the text.
- Legends for illustrations should be typed using double spacing, starting on a separate page, with Arabic numerals corresponding to the illustrations. - Symbols, arrows, numbers, or letters used to identify parts of the illustrations must be identified and explained in the legend. Graphs
• Unique, concise axis labels; do not repeat the Figure caption.
• Uniform size for graphs of similar type.
• Type size that will be easily read when the graph is reduced to one column width.
• Lines that are thick and solid (100% black). 6.2. Manuscript preparation for other types of articles: In other types of article which can not be arranged in the above order, please follow each category's format: Clinical or Case Report: It should describe the presentation, diagnosis and management of clinical cases (6 double-spaced pages) and accompanied by no more than 4 quality descriptive illustrations. • It must contain "Introduction, Case report, Discussion and Conclusion, and References.
• Include a brief summary. Literature Review: Review articles using a systematic approach to describe what is known from the literature about a clinical or technical dental topic and evaluating the strength of the evidence (10 double-spaced pages). It should be brief but complete and provide documentation by references.
